Proposal for UE Innovation Hub · Potsdam

Design
for Good.

A real-world innovation course connecting students, companies, public institutions and civil society to solve problems that matter — outside the classroom.

01 · Course concept

Leave university.
Learn from reality.

Students work on live social, environmental and corporate challenges. They observe people and environments, identify overlooked problems, build prototypes and test solutions in context.

01Observe

Go into the field. Volunteer. Interview. Shadow. Notice what a brief cannot show.

02Understand

Separate symptoms from causes. Turn assumptions into evidence.

03Build

Design + Tech + Business teams create tangible products, services or systems.

04Test

Return to the real environment and test with the people affected.

05Sustain

Build a path to implementation, partnership, funding or continued development.

AI can generate 100 answers. The student still needs to learn how to find the right problem.
02 · Teaching philosophy

No solution
before insight.

The course teaches the abilities that remain essential in an AI-heavy world: observation, empathy, judgement, systems thinking, ethical reasoning and experimentation.

Human first

Meet people before designing for them.

Evidence

Test assumptions instead of defending opinions.

Interdisciplinary

Combine desirability, feasibility and viability.

Responsible

Ask not only what can be built, but what should be built.

03 · Industry network

Real challenges.
Real partners.

Companies and organisations bring unresolved problems, access and expertise. UE provides multidisciplinary student teams, academic guidance, research and prototyping.

04 · Project pipeline

One semester.
Multiple live briefs.

Partners do not ask students for free consulting. They offer a meaningful challenge that benefits from fresh, multidisciplinary exploration.

AChallenge

Partner frames a real problem, user group or opportunity space.

BAccess

Students meet users, experts, staff or communities.

CExperiment

Teams create multiple directions and prototype selected concepts.

DDemo Day

Partners, recruiters, academics and ecosystem actors see tested outcomes at UE.

05 · Why UE gains

Not another elective.
A visible UE platform.

UE already positions the Innovation Hub around Tech + Data + Design, project-based learning and industry integration. Design for Good turns that promise into a repeatable public format.

Employability

Real organisations, real evidence, stronger portfolios.

Corporate relationships

Projects can open internships, recruitment and research.

Visibility

Demo days and partner stories create meaningful PR.

Research

Projects can evolve into theses and applied research.

Partner funding

Sponsorship, prototypes and foundation support.

Ecosystem position

UE becomes a convening point for Berlin–Potsdam innovation.

06 · Lifelong learning

Start as a course.
Grow into a platform.

Design for Good can begin with enrolled students and later expand into flexible learning for alumni, professionals and partner organisations.

Semester Course

Credit-bearing interdisciplinary social innovation course.

Micro-Credential

Short field-based programme for alumni, professionals and external learners.

Stackable Pathway

Research, systems thinking, prototyping and impact modules that may build toward a larger certificate, subject to UE approval.

Proposal in one sentence

UE already has the disciplines.
Germany has the problems and partners.
Design for Good connects them.

A pilot could begin small: one interdisciplinary cohort, two or three real challenge partners, one semester and one public Demo Day — then grow based on evidence.
